He and his wife died with the flu leaving his mother (Mary Wielgos Hojnowska) to raise his six children along with her seven and two of Mercy's children. Mary also ran son John's tavern. Mercy fell off the porch and died. Her husband left with a young girl and left the two small children to be raised by Mary.
