SS Rhein

On June 9, 1906, the SS Rhein left from Bremen carrying Aleksandra Gurewicz, age 15 years and her nine year old sister, Franciska. They arrived in Baltimore on June 22, 1906. From there they went to Chicago where they had a cousin living. The cousin's name was Jan Piotrowski. He lived at 9302 Calumet Street. Aleksandra was from Huta, Suwalki, Poland. She was able to read and write. She left Poland with all her belongings wrapped in a tablecloth and $10.00. The $10.00 was reduced to $8.00 by the time she left the ship.

The SS Rhein was built in 1899 by Blohm and Voss. Its tonnage was 10,058. In 1917, it was seized by the USA and was renamed the Susquehanna. It was scrapped in Japan in December 1929.
